Question in Nebraska vs. Missouri Game: Who Wants It?

November 03, 2006

Story image 1

A great setting for a homecoming game.

It could be a make-or-break thing for Nebraska and Missouri when the two Big 12 rivals meet Saturday morning, tied for the lead in the North Division.

It will the 100th meeting of the two squads, and Nebraska has won the last 14 games in Lincoln. Nebraska’s homecoming loss to Texas Tech last year ended a 36-year string of homecoming victories.

The Huskers-Tigers matchup brings together the teams that were preseason favorites for the North title. Nebraska was seen as having its best chance – in waaaay too many years – to have a real shot at the Big 12 championship.

NU and Mizzou are 3-2 in the conference. Nebraska is 6-3 overall, No. 25 Missouri is 7-2.

Nebraska has disappointed some in the Husker Nation, with a 22-20 loss to Texas, followed by an embarrassing 41-29 loss to Oklahoma State last week. The contest was not as close as the score indicated, either. NU was dropped from the national polls after the loss.

Missouri botched a chance to take charge in the North last week, falling to Oklahoma. Every point Oklahoma scored followed a Missouri mistake.

The Huskers have been plagued by inconsistency in a pass defense that was racked by early season injuries. Both the defensive and offensive lines have generally displayed two modes: Good job! and Where were you?

The stomach-turning thing for Nebraska fans this year is the obvious fact that nothing, absolutely nothing, is guaranteed. There is not, and has not been, a single game in which Husker fans could reasonably feel that “everything will be fine.”

ABC television will broadcast the game regionally. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. Central Time.
