In January a new state law will allow qualified Nebraskans to apply for permits to carry concealed handguns. However, it leaves in place the authority of cities to further regulate or ban concealed weapons within their boundaries.
Several Columbus officials said they wanted to see how the “concealed carry” law would impact other cities of similar size.
“I don't know what the state (Legislature} was thinking when they approved this bill; they put a lot of burden on the cities,” Councilman Joe Jarceke said.
The Legislature debated the issue of concealed handguns at various times over the past ten years. A bill was passed this year and signed by Governor Dave Heineman.
With a low crime rate, is Columbus right to continue the ban on handguns?
