Cheney Will Raise Money For 3rd District GOP House Candidate
June 14, 2006
Republican Adrian Smith will get some fundraising help from the White House in his bid for congress from the 3rd Congressional District.
Vice President Dick Cheney is scheduled to appear in Grand Island at a $200-per-pate lunch June 26. He will pose for individual pictures with those willing to pony up $2,100.
Smith, a member of the Legislature, faces Democrat Scott Kleeb. Both want the seek held by retiring, three-term Republican Congressman Tom Osborne.
Cheney was born in Lincoln and moved to Wyoming when he was 13.
Smith’s campaign funding became an issue in the May primary when he accepted some $390,000 from the national Club for Growth.
The anti-tax organization opposes agricultural subsidies and tax incentives for ethanol development.
In their first debate, Kleeb criticized Smith for taking the organization’s money. Smith’s opponents in the three-way Republican primary also criticized his affiliation with the group. Smith said his support from the Club for Growth was based on his record of supporting tax cuts.
Cheney is the all-time leader in raising money at a Nebraska fundraiser. His appearance in 2003 raised a record $400,000 for President Bush. Cheney appeared at a Lincoln fundraiser for then-Republican congressional candidate Jeff Fortenberry in 2004. Fortenberry won the 2nd District seat.
Kleeb's campaign is being championed, in part, by one-time governor and former U.S. Senator Bob Kerreny.
Will the Club for Growth thing make any difference?
