Adult Mountain Lion Killed Near Gretna

November 07, 2005

Story image 1

Authorities are examining the body of an adult mountain lion that was found Sunday on I-80 near Gretna in Sarpy County.

The animal, six-feet long and weighing some 130 pounds, apparently was killed when hit by a motor vehicle.

Local resident Mimi Lemmers said she dialed 911 at 7:15 a.m. to report seeing the cougar.

Lemmers told KETV-7 that the 911 operator immediately asked if she was certain that the carcass was not that of a deer. Lemmers said she replied: “Deer don’t have paws!”

The big cat may have been the same one that was the subject of a previous call that came in at about 1 a.m.

Several sighting of mountain lions have been reported in the Omaha metropolitan area in the past year.
