LINCOLN - The University of Nebraska figures it will spend some $2.3 million on the Cornhuskers? participation in the Rose Bowl.

The money, including bonuses for the coaching staff, will come from the Rose Bowl's payout to the Big 12 Conference.

A Husker victory in the Jan. 3 national championship game would mean an additional $62,500 bonus for Coach Frank Solich. He will get a bonus in the same amount for taking NU to a national title game.

The university said the Rose Bowl contract calls for each school to send its team, coaches, band and yell squad to Pasadena, Calif.

"Participation by selected university representatives at game-related events is required by the bowl contract," NU said in a prepared statement. "Members of the official party are university officials whose expenses are paid for by the Big 12 payout from the Rose Bowl."

"Anticipating finalization of the contract, we have constructed a working budget that covers the travel and participation costs of the groups expected by the Rose Bowl Committee to attend the game and its functions," said Christine Jackson, UNL vice chancellor for business and finance. "The budget is well within the Big 12 allocation."

"The university is contractually obligated to make bonus payments to coaches based on participation in or winning a national championship game," she said. "By controlling expenses to the approved budget, the university will be abl to fulfill those obligations out of the Rose Bowl expense allotment."

Those included in the traveling group: football players, 176; coaches and athletic staff, 105; band and staff, 362; yell squad, 16; athletics department dependents, 121; board of regents, nine plus spouse or guest; university representatives, 14 plus spouse or guest.
